TROMBONE QUARTET & QUINTET ARRANGEMENTS
Why Trombone Group Music? Why NOT?
For many years, Roger has performed with music groups of various sizes and capabilities. He has observed that sections of student/amateur musicians often have difficulty working together.
When performing in small groups such as brass quintets and trombone quintets (at Christmas), he noted that they tended to work more cohesively.
In order to aid students in a trombone section to learn to work together, he began developing arrangements of "standards" (listed below) designed to teach as well as entertain. Each part is featured at various times, thus promoting strength throughout the section. Several arrangements are for college/professional level players (not for wimps), but they should be playable by most high school sections with a little extra effort.
The following arrangements are for Trombone Quartet and Quintet (except as noted). The parts can also be performed by Baritone/Euphonium/Tuba or mixed low brass ensembles.
Several Brass Quintet and other group arrangements are now included.

The beautiful ballad by Thad Jones features the Piano (with Bass), Trumpet section (with Bass Trombone), Baritone Sax and Bass Trombone soli (with Trumpet chorale), and finally the Sax section leading the full band.

A Dizzy Night in Tunisia - Gillespie & Paparelli
The Dizzy Gillespie classic features Trombone 1 playing the melody as a half-time ballad against Latin style rhythm accompaniment. After an optionally open solo section (in swing tempo), an ensemble soli - without rhythm section - leads to a jazz waltz by the lower voices. The final section features Alto Sax 1, Flugelhorn and Trombone 1 in an up-tempo recap of the melody.

The charming melody from A Charlie Brown Christmas is woven among the colors of the band as each section is featured at various times.

Con Alma - Gillespie
The Flugelhorn and Trombones introduce “Dizzy” Gillespie’s classic with a Chorale. The full band transitions to a Jazz Waltz featuring all sections at various times. An optionally open solo section provides opportunity for several players to stretch. After the final full band chorus in Waltz time, the Flugelhorn and Trombones close with an eight-bar coda in Chorale style.
Double-Wide Boogie - Wallace
An original composition - a Double Blues pattern (24 measures) with a swinging boogie-woogie beat. The first chorus features the Trombones, which are joined in the second chorus by the Trumpets echoing the lead line. After the solo section is a Sax and Brass riff chorus - followed by a swinging Trumpet soli. The Trombones and Trumpets return to boogie on out.

A short and sweet version of Duke Ellington’s classic flag waiver. With a performance time of about 2:30, it makes a handy opener. The Trombone and Sax sections are featured. The Drummer is also showcased with brief solo breaks.

Who’s Got the Blues? - Wallace
An original composition in the style of a Blues March. The Bass, Baritone Sax and Trombone section carry the melody in the chorus. After the optionally open solo section, a swinging Trumpet section soli leads back to the low voices reprise of the chorus.
